Building GridSight: How We Turned Raw F1 Data into a Live Analytics Platform

A behind-the-scenes look at how we built GridSight, a Formula 1 data analytics platform featuring real-time standings, historical comparisons, and driver performance breakdowns.

Case Study

At Oriontech, we believe the best way to demonstrate what we do is to show it. That is why we built GridSight — a Formula 1 data analytics platform designed for the racing community. It takes raw race data and transforms it into rich, interactive visualisations that fans and analysts can explore in real time.

Why Formula 1?

Formula 1 generates an extraordinary volume of data every race weekend: lap times, tyre strategies, pit-stop durations, qualifying deltas, and championship standings that shift with every Grand Prix. Fans are hungry for insight, but most of this data is locked away in spreadsheets or scattered across forums. We saw an opportunity to build something better — a single platform where the numbers come alive.

Real-Time Standings and Live Data

GridSight pulls in the latest race results and updates driver and constructor standings as each Grand Prix concludes. The platform displays the full 2025 season at a glance: points, positions, and progression over time. Whether you want to see how Verstappen's lead has evolved or track a midfield battle between teams, the data is always current and always visual.

Historical Comparisons

One of GridSight's standout features is its ability to compare seasons and drivers across different eras. How does this year's championship battle stack up against 2021? How has a driver's qualifying pace changed over three seasons? These comparisons, which would take hours to compile manually, are available instantly through interactive charts and filters.

Driver Performance Breakdowns

Every driver's season tells a story. GridSight breaks down individual performance by race, showing finishing positions, points scored, and consistency metrics. This gives fans and analysts a granular view of form, reliability, and momentum — the kind of insight that makes watching the next race even more compelling.

The Tech Behind the Platform

GridSight is built on the same principles we apply to industrial analytics projects: clean API integration, efficient data pipelines, and visualisations that prioritise clarity over clutter. We used modern web technologies to ensure the platform is fast, responsive, and accessible on any device. The architecture is designed to handle live data feeds without lag, so users always see the latest information.

From Passion Project to Proof of Concept

GridSight started as an internal project — a way for our team to sharpen our skills on data visualisation and real-time analytics in a domain we are genuinely passionate about. It quickly became something more: a live, public demonstration of what Oriontech can deliver. If we can turn the complexity of a Formula 1 season into an intuitive dashboard, imagine what we can do with your operational data.

Explore It Yourself

GridSight is live and free to use. Head over to www.Gridsight.co.za to explore the current season, compare drivers, and see real-time analytics in action. And if what you see makes you think about what a similar platform could do for your business, we would love to have that conversation.
